A useful analogy might be the retraining of an airline pilot onto a different aircraft type – aimed primarily at those who think they already know enough .

To begin with, the pilot will be knowledgeable, skilled and competent enough to handle the original aircraft type but when everything changes, they have to start again with the learning process.  Some things will have changed only a bit – but still have to be revisited.  Other things will be completely new.  If this proves too much – then you will probably need to change your ambitions.  Getting it incomplete or wrong – even slightly wrong – could mean falling out of the sky.  For you – as an independent professional – “falling out of the sky” would simply mean NOT achieving what you set out to achieve. This could vitiate the whole purpose of changing to an Independent. Success is not an accident.
